The Buck Still Stops at the Top

Rumsfeld’s departure might help things a little bit, but apparently, even he had expressed to Bush that the Iraq “strategy” was failing. In a memo reported in the press today :

“In my view it is time for a major adjustment. Clearly, what U.S. forces are currently doing in Iraq is not working well enough or fast enough,” Rumsfeld said in the classified memo, dated November 6.

Now, this memo is dated after his resignation, so it’s still too little too late, but it demonstrates that Bush really isn’t ready to let go of his plan yet. He continues to push his strategy, which at this point his fellow Iraq war planners have even abandoned. In the end, it still comes down to the Commander in Chief who will have to give the order to pull out. This may have to wait for the next president.
